Our History

In early 2007 several local Waterbury residents organized the 1st annual Waterbury Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Rally as part of the nationwide Step-It-Up Day on April 14. The event was a standing-room-only success. The attendees overflowed the Waterbury Senior Center, and then formed a noisy, colorful parade that streamed down Waterbury’s Main Street.

On that day, almost 50 people signed up on a clipboard indicating that they were interested in continuing local efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote energy efficiency and the use of renewable resources in Waterbury and the surrounding area. Waterbury LEAP was born!

From the very beginning LEAP has been an independent organization fueled by the energy and ideas of local volunteer members. We support our town leaders whenever possible, but we are not officially affiliated with the Town of Waterbury. LEAP is the only town energy committee in Vermont to become a 501(c)(3) non-profit.  We took that step because we wanted to provide as much support as possible to our neighbors as they consider their green energy options.
